This spontaneous, annual presence—which takes shape without relying on official international organizations or major global media advertisements—has captured the attention of numerous analysts. Today, this phenomenon is referred to as the miracle of Arbaeen. It has raised profound questions in the fields of sociology, culture, politics, and religious studies: Why do millions of people endure the hardships of this long journey every year? What force dissolves the structural differences among human beings and unites them in one shared path?

At first glance, religious sentiments might seem like an adequate answer. However, the objective dimensions of this event demonstrate that this movement has transcended a mere religious ritual. The truth is that Arbaeen is a multifaceted phenomenon with civilizational, media, and social functions. This article attempts to provide an analytical and documented overview of the various quantitative and qualitative dimensions of the Arbaeen Walk, its capacity for civilization-building, its media transformations, and its role in shaping contemporary identity movements.

This statistical growth occurs despite the fact that the Middle East has faced massive security challenges, economic instability, and extreme climate changes, such as the scorching summer heat, in recent decades—a testament to the profound dimension of the miracle of Arbaeen in attracting hearts (Rahimi 450).

-Unrivaled Demographic Diversity: The demographic composition of the Arbaeen Walk is not confined to any race, language, or social class. On this path, children and the elderly, doctors and laborers, the wealthy and the needy, walk side by side (Hosseini et al. 106).

Recreating Social Relations and the Capacities for Shifting toward a New Islamic Civilization

In the light of this event, a new social order and civilization emerges that differs fundamentally from the material definitions of modernity.

In today’s world, national borders and political interests dictate the nature of relations between nations. The Arbaeen Walk, however, introduces a structure where people’s interactions are redefined based on faith, love, and a shared goal. The deep bonds formed on this path among Iranian, Iraqi, Afghan, Pakistani, Lebanese pilgrims, as well as visitors from European and African countries, establish a constructive foundation for the formation of a unified global community (Moosavi).

Civilizations are not built solely through theorizing or industrial tools; rather, they require a collective spirit and an objective lifestyle. The Arbaeen gathering is a miniature yet real blueprint of the New Islamic Civilization whose fundamental principles rest upon the following pillars:

-Unconditional Service and Just Distribution of Wealth: Along the route, vital necessities—such as food, accommodation, and medical services—are provided to everyone without discrimination or financial expectation, creating a unique de-commodified space of pure altruism (Nikjoo et al., “A Review of Spiritual” 15).

-Social Responsibility: The spontaneous commitment of the people to ensuring security, cleanliness, and the sustainability of this movement reflects the highest level of civic participation and social capital (Moulaei et al. 90). This ethics-driven social structure of the Arbaeen March offers an unparalleled, bottom-up model for macro-planning in Islamic societies, successfully bringing values out of textbooks and into the heart of active society (Panahian, “Arbaeen”).

Related hashtags become global trends every year, which itself testifies to the miracle of Arbaeen in the digital sphere. This phenomenon presents a global audience—which previously received a clouded or violent image of the Middle East and Islam—with manifestations of peace, sacrifice, kindness, and convergence. This transformation has elevated the pilgrim from a passive media consumer to an “active narrator,” giving rise to a new form of public and grassroots diplomacy.

 

Cultural and Identity Movement-Building Among the New Generation

Over the past two decades, the Arbaeen Walk has not merely settled for repeating a traditional ritual. Instead, it has evolved into one of the most dynamic platforms for producing culture, art, and modern social symbols. By weaving authentic Ashura traditions with contemporary innovations, this event has successfully forged a vibrant and dynamic identity for the younger generation.

This movement has become a vast source of inspiration for artists, writers, and poets across the Islamic world. The creation of transnational anthems, international cinematic documentaries, major photography competitions, and street performances (such as Ta’ziyeh and modern theater) points to the formation of a new artistic school centered on this event. These artistic productions create a common language that effortlessly conveys the profound emotions and messages of Arbaeen to audiences beyond borders.

Furthermore, the institution of the Mawkib has undergone a structural transformation. Once simply a place to distribute food and offer rest, many modern Mawkibs managed by youths and academics have turned into multipurpose cultural institutions. Today, they serve as centers for specialized services, including:

-Multilingual booths to answer intellectual and religious inquiries.

-Specialized medical, therapeutic, and free psychological counseling services.

-Specialized forums and seminars for elites, university professors, and thinkers along the route.

This structural development proves that Arbaeen possesses a high capacity to meet contemporary intellectual and social needs, playing a fundamental role in reinforcing religious identity and intellectual resilience among the youth.

 

A Forward-Looking Horizon: The Ideal Society and the Awaiting Community

In the deepest layer of analysis, Islamic thinkers and scholars do not view the Karbala march as a mere historical commemoration of the past. Rather, they perceive it as a forward-looking phenomenon and a bright vision for the future of the world (Mutahhari 3-4). The Arbaeen March serves as a practical exercise and a prelude to preparing for the realization of a spiritual global order (Khamenei, “Prelude” 2).

Islamic narrations promise a future era in which a global society will be established based on equity, justice, peace, fair distribution of wealth, and complete brotherhood under divine guardianship (Majlisi 52: 336). The unique characteristics of this trek—such as security maintained without rigid military structures, an abundance of blessings, free access for everyone to basic needs, and the dissolution of racial and ethnic grudges in the love of the Imam—serve as a tangible, small-scale personification of that promised society (Panahian, “Arbaeen” 74–77). During this journey, the pilgrim experiences life in this Utopia for a few days, tasting a life steeped in faith and justice.

Ultimately, the presence of millions of people in this walk forms the core of an awaiting community, symbolizing a collective renewal of allegiance and a movement toward sublime human and divine values. This gathering demonstrates the resilience of Islamic societies against pressures, threats, and sanctions, showing how material power equations in the world can be challenged through faith and resistance (Khomeini, Will and Testament 14–16). Consequently, the Arbaeen Walk is regarded as the primary ground for the spiritual, intellectual, and social cultivation of the Global Muslim Community (Ummah) in preparation for the advent of the Savior—a dynamic movement guiding a humanity weary of modern materialism and individualism toward a new horizon (Khamenei, “Display of Power”).
