Who Is the Human Being

Who Is the Human Being?

From an Islamic perspective, the human being is considered the most comprehensive entity, encompassing all realms of existence and beings within himself. The world of creation is a reflection of his inner worlds. According to Islam, the human being is the deputy of God on earth, resembling God the most and having the potential for infinite growth and progress. He is an infinite being who seeks infinity; he is perfectionist and limitless and has the capability to develop and grow infinitely. Human life originates from God and continues in His embrace until eternity.

The Findings of Modern Western Philosophy about the Human Being

Modern Western philosophy defines the human merely as a material being with no spiritual or divine manifestation, limiting his needs to material and economic matters. This philosophy views the human as a machine, with his various desires, emotions, and feelings simply the result of different hormones released in his blood. However, even if we can intellectually align ourselves with definitions like “the human as a tool-making animal” or “the human as a speaking animal,” there are dimensions, desires, emotions, and inclinations within us that cannot be understood or explained by this view

An Islamic Perspective: What Does It Mean to Be a Human Being?

Our desire for infinity, perfection, and immortality is a longing that only Islam’s definition of the human being provides a satisfactory answer to. Other schools either deny these desires outright or describe them as excessive human greed. Now the question is, ‘What does it mean to be a human being?’ from an Islamic perspective?

The Truth of the Human Being

Our essence is the Spirit that God breathed into us, and this Spirit is inherently thirsty for connection with its kind. This thirst manifests itself as the desire for infinity within us. If a person does not channel this desire for infinity in its proper direction, he will inevitably focus on the inherent qualities of his lower dimensions. He becomes someone who, as his income increases, only desires more money; regardless of his current position, he seeks advancement to a higher status; and attaining various academic degrees does not satisfy him, leading him to gain higher degrees.

The Way God Defines the Human Being

God describes the human as a being who begins with God and ends in Him. The human is a continuous being originating from God and returning to Him. Before being born physically on earth, humans have tasted infinity in another realm, which is why they restlessly seek the same infinity in this world. The human is a being who, throughout his infinite existence, spends some years in worldly life and can either become the lowest being or God’s most comprehensive manifestation and His deputy.

Inner Peace: The Lost Treasure of the Human Being

Peace is what we have lost, and all our activities are aimed at achieving peace. If we do not eat, hunger disrupts our peace; if we do not drink water, thirst makes us irritable; without a companion, loneliness overwhelms us; if we fail to understand the causes of natural phenomena such as wind, rain, the growth of plants, the cycle of day and night, and eclipses, we fall into great confusion. For every desire felt, the human being seeks answers in the external world. But why does our advancement in science and discoveries not add to our inner peace?

The Balanced Human Being

Islam introduces inner peace, happiness, and love as the characteristics of true believers and considers someone lacking these attributes as unbalanced and not normal. However, these attributes are the lost treasures of our contemporary world. A normal and balanced human, as defined by Islam, is rare even among Muslims. Lack of success and the increasing social despair and frustration can be traced to this issue. Our view about ‘What does it mean to be a human being?’ differs from the definition offered by God, and this leads to incorrect decisions, thoughts, behaviors, and actions, ultimately taking us further from the criteria of bliss.

God's Purpose in Human Creation

Why did God create us, and what was His purpose? This question has been addressed by many myths and religions, and its answer determines people’s lifestyle and worldview. Islam defines God’s purpose in human creation as servitude, believing that the outcome of servitude is achieving similarity to God.
